Empowering Veterans Through Nature

Our Veterans Expedition is a powerful wilderness experience for veterans seeking clarity, connection, and renewal ✨ — set in the awe-inspiring, sacred landscapes of the Navajo Nation. 🏜️🌄🌌
The desert changes you.
Vast horizons. Towering red rock formations. Silence that runs deep. This is a place where distractions fall away and perspective returns.
The Navajo Nation is not just beautiful—it is sacred. For generations, this land has been honored as a place of meaning, reflection, and spiritual connection. There is a presence here that invites you to slow down, take a breath, and reconnect with what matters most.
This isn’t a typical veteran retreat. It’s immersive—and it works.
Shared challenge builds real connection.
Moving through rugged desert terrain together creates trust, resilience, and lasting bonds.
The environment does the work.
Without phones, noise, or daily demands, your mind clears and your focus sharpens.
Intentional reflection creates clarity.
Guided conversations and time in the land help you process, reset, and move forward with purpose.
You won’t do this alone.
You’ll be alongside other veterans who understand—no explanations needed.
“I expected some hard hiking miles, camaraderie, and introspection, but I did not envision the profound and transformative impact the journey would have on me. I have participated in and fully appreciated other veteran events, but this experience impacted me on a whole other level. The beauty and sacredness of the land, the bonds formed with my fellow hikers and warriors, and my spiritual growth will forever hold a special space in my heart.”
You don’t need to be in crisis to come. Some join to step away and recharge. Others come carrying weight they haven’t had space to process.
What they find is the same:
Clarity.
Connection.
Renewal.
The land creates the space.
The challenge creates the shift.
You carry it forward.
These expeditions fill quickly.
If this is even on your radar, don’t wait. Step into the desert—and come back changed.
Veterans are responsible for their own airfare to Pheonix AZ. We provide transportation to & from the airport to the expedition site. One night of hotel lodging is provided. Gear and food will also be provided.

Guiding wilderness trips for veterans offers a powerful blend of therapeutic and practical benefits. For many veterans navigating the transition from the structured world of military service to civilian life, the wilderness provides a rare space for healing, reflection, and renewed purpose. At the heart of these experiences are our guides—military veterans themselves—who bring years of backcountry leadership and deep understanding of the veteran journey. Alongside them, our therapeutic guides combine a love for wild places with advanced training in mental health, creating an environment where growth, connection, and transformation can truly take root.

Shared suffering, often experienced through challenging group activities, fosters deep connections and a sense of camaraderie. When individuals face adversity together, they build trust and mutual respect, essential elements for strong relationships. This phenomenon is particularly evident in activities that involve "Type II Fun," a term coined by adventurers to describe experiences that are tough and uncomfortable in the moment but rewarding and memorable in retrospect. The physical challenge of wilderness activities promotes fitness and overall health, essential for veterans after the rigors of military service. Guided trips offer structured physical exertion, which can alleviate stress and improve mental health.

More recently focused on the obstacle’s facing our veterans and their importance to building strong and resilient communities, he participated as a civilian in a 14-week program utilizing a one-week wilderness adventure followed by fitness and mental health exercises. Having faced traumas throughout his life, began linking commonalities within the daily struggles of his experience with that of the veterans around him. Building both a practical and factual understanding of the link between the two, along with the impact the wilderness plays in healing and bringing people together, looks forward to using his unique worldview to positively impact the men and women who have served and sacrificed for the freedoms we all enjoy.

Through that spectacular journey, she experienced firsthand the profound impact of the expedition and the deep connections formed with fellow veterans, and she welcomed the opportunity to support the mission of Veterans in the Wild.

Andi, currently serving as a Reserve Navy Chaplain, has found a way to merge her love for spiritual strength with the challenges of field exercises in all outdoor settings. She believes that when we view nature as a resource to conquer, we overlook its power to teach us—approaching nature with an open heart to learn and grow benefits our body, mind, soul, and those in our community. Our experiences in nature can alter our outlook on our lives. Each living thing in nature reveals some part of the Divine, and by allowing ourselves the time and energy to venture into the woods, we open our minds and hearts to the power of nature to heal and transform us. An avid runner, hiker, and one who loves to pause and appreciate the beauty of nature, Andi is enthusiastic about being a part of the team to lead veterans’ groups into the wild, offering them an experience like no other.
She resides with her husband and family in San Antonio, TX. She is a Board-Certified Chaplain and trained Crisis Counselor and has completed extensive work in Suicide Prevention and Warrior Toughness.

In June 2021, my husband and I had the opportunity to go on what we still consider the retreat of a lifetime. The trip, led by Brandon Harding and his team, consisted of a 5-day camping expedition throughout Linville Gorge in the mountains of western North Carolina. My husband and I arrived with feelings of excitement and anxiety and left feeling connected, united, and with a clear definition of what we believed a marriage should be for us. Our emotional and insightful exchanges during the nightly campfires were elicited by Brandon’s masterful facilitation of thoughtful and challenging dialogue. Every task and activity built momentum towards each couple’s unique goals with a curriculum meticulously handcrafted and expertly executed.
My husband’s decision, at the time an active-duty USMC Sergeant Major, to leave behind his phone, his command and relinquish control for a few days was not one made lightly. On top of having two small girls at home, as a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I had my own panel of patients and hesitations about being unreachable. We had only hoped it was worth it. Trust me, it was beyond worth it. Some of the skills learned and agreements made during the retreat continue to play a role in the guidance of us as a couple today as we navigate post-military life. My husband returned from the trip with the confidence that his marriage was secure and recognized the dedication needed to be successful both at home and at work. He was able to convey to his unit that a “good” Marine is not just “good” at work. Back at his command, he worked diligently to incorporate training and family events that highlighted the importance that a Marine must be personally ready to be combat-ready. It has been 3 years for us, and we are still so grateful for Brandon and his brilliance in curriculum, compassion, and 100% professionalism. His ability to take couples from various parts of the country and backgrounds fostering their ability to shine as themselves, as a family unit, and in their occupational environment is truly magnificent. We know how lucky we were to have such an experience and hope others take advantage of Brandon and his expertise for both personal and professional growth!

Just got back from one of the most powerful experiences of my life @veterans.in.the.wild Marriage Expedition a 4-day journey through the wilderness with my wife and four other incredible veteran couples.
We hiked together through breathtaking landscapes, shared deep and honest conversations on the trail, and cold plunged in a crystal-clear river that shocked our systems and woke up something ancient in us. Each night, we circled around the fire pit, and that’s where the real magic happened. The walls came down. We laughed, cried, told the truth, and held space for each other in a way that felt sacred.
The vulnerability, the rawness, the courage was something I’ll never forget. And none of it would’ve been possible without the guidance of our amazing facilitators, who created the perfect container for growth, healing, and reconnection.
If you’re a veteran and married or even just trying to hold it together in the chaos of post-military life, I can’t recommend this experience enough. It’s not therapy in a room. It’s nature and real conversations that go way deeper.
This was medicine.
This was needed.
This was worth it.

I recently attended a marriage retreat held by Veterans in the Wild in beautiful Olympic National Park, Washington. I wanted to personally take a few moments to type this out and express how grateful I am for the opportunity to attend this retreat.
The trip exceeded my expectations regarding the impact it would have on my marriage. Joy and I were able to be together and focus on us without the distractions of everyday life. We took time to reminisce about what brought us together and how we fell in love with each other. I don’t think we could accomplish this in our day-to-day lives with all the distractions we face. Looking back, I regret not making more time for each other. Maybe we forget, or maybe we just feel too busy with “life” to slow down and do so.
Along with all the challenges that come with being a veteran, our families also go along for those rides without always understanding the “why” behind it all. This program gave us a place to work through those things together in a way where, as a veteran, I didn’t feel like I needed to hide those emotions. For the first time, we were able to face them together.
Joy and I also got to spend most of a day completely alone in the wilderness, without anyone else around. During that time, we reconnected in ways I don’t ever recall experiencing before. We even took a couple of dips into the beautiful waters of the Dosewallips River. If you have never been to this area, my goodness, you need to check it out—words cannot do it justice.
This was also my wife’s first time hiking and camping like this, and I am beyond grateful that I got to share this experience with her.
